Nadejda and Vladimir Topouzanov
Poppy House - An Urban Fairy-Tale

Here, architects Nadejda and Vladimir Topouzanov tell us how they transformed a century old worker’s home in Montreal’s St-Henri neighborhood into a bright, practical, living space, dubbed the Poppy House. In 2007, The project wins the Excellence Award for Residential Architecture by the Ordre des architectes du Québec and a Silver Vizar – European Award for Bulgarian Architecture. A traffic stopper, the resuscitated structure, retaining its original building shape, is wrapped with a continuous floral wallpaper of new, colored bricks, inspired by the trumpet vine (Campsis Radicanis) found in the courtyard. The distinctive and joyful pattern of the Poppy House reads as a whimsical, large scale urban graffiti.
